But is it just one more thing that therapists are asked to do? The return gained from the minimal effort it entails to be mindful makes this the one thing you should incorporate if you want to enjoy your session, day, and life well. This is not just a command to ‘smile and be happy!’. Mindfulness has been studied like here and these scholarly studies as well.

Mindfulness despite the image shown, is not the same as meditation. You can be mindful in your actions. Taking a moment or even a fleeting few seconds to breath deeply can help you remember that you are choosing to be mindful and not reactive. Taking a moment with your students in the first minute of speech can set the tone for you and for them. And when that doesn’t work and behaviors are less than ideal, employing some mindfulness on your part can help develop that pause to let you react in a more skilled and calm manner.

Lets take a look at the benefits of incorporating these practices into your speech room and find out how to bring mindfulness into what you are already doing. Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present and aware of the moment without judgment, its integration into speech therapy has proven to be particularly beneficial.

How Mindfulness Can Enhance Speech Therapy

Improved Focus and Attention: Mindfulness helps clients focus on the task at hand, enhancing their ability to process and respond to speech stimuli.

Reduced Anxiety and Stress: Many individuals with speech difficulties experience anxiety. Mindfulness techniques can help manage these emotions, creating a more relaxed environment for therapy.

Enhanced Self-Awareness: By becoming more attuned to their bodies and thoughts, clients can better understand their speech patterns and challenges.

Improved Emotional Regulation: Mindfulness helps clients regulate emotions, which is crucial for managing communication breakdowns.

Increased Self-Efficacy: Mindfulness can boost clients’ confidence in their ability to communicate effectively.

Mindfulness For the SLP!

Before we can incorporate mindfulness into speech we need to raise our own mindfulness. Because the benefits above are also available to us. I work now and have always worked with students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. These students can come in with a lot of trauma, unstable households and insecurities of food, safety and shelter. This is not to say that these students alone have a corner on trauma or on a need to regulate their emotions, no far from it. Everyone can indeed benefit from these practices, even those that are well regulated. I bring my students as an example because I see that their “behaviors” and “lack of focus” or maybe their own poor sense of self are improved by mindfulness.

On a personal level this has helped me tremendously in regulating my reactions and frustration levels. It has also improved my experience in the therapy room, even if that room is actually a table in the back of the classroom.

Before you can successfully bring mindfulness into your classroom you should find 5 minutes before your day begins to bring yourself into regulation. Honestly I often do this in my car right after I park and before I hit the doors of my building.

Find a Comfortable Position: Sit or lie down in a relaxed position, I literally sit on my chair in my office looking toward my computer, or in my car before I go in. If the day is particularly rough I will go in to the bathroom and lean against the wall! Don’t over think it!

Focus on Your Breath: Gently bring your attention to your breath. Notice the sensation of the air entering the tip of your nose and follow it down into your lungs, feel your lungs expand and then follow it back out.

Observe Without Judgment: Simply observe your breath without trying to control it. Let go of any expectations or judgments.

Return to the Breath: Your mind will wander. That’s normal. Gently bring your attention back to your breath whenever you notice your thoughts drifting. On thing I do here, is label the thought “thinking” , “planning” , “rehearsing” , “ ruminating”. I find this helps me identify which thoughts keep coming up and can inform me what repetitive thoughts are with me. I also remind myself that I can think about that problem when I am done, that it can wait the 5 or 10 minutes I am practicing breathing.

Body Scan: As you continue to breathe, expand your awareness to your body. Notice any sensations without judgment. Do you have tension in your forehead, shoulders? If I can I release the tension when I notice it. I also like to direct my thoughts to my hands and feet and any sensations I experience there.

Tips:

Count your breaths: This can help focus your attention.

Label your breaths: You can mentally label each inhale as “in” and each exhale as “out.”

Use a mantra: A short word or phrase can be repeated silently to anchor your mind. You could try peace on the exhale and calm on the inhale.

Remember, the goal is not to perfect your breathing but to cultivate awareness. Be patient with yourself, and enjoy the process. Though the process is described in detail I literally do it in just a couple of minutes. Then I quickly think of 3 things I am grateful for, sometimes as small as finding a good parking spot, then spare a thought for someone who is suffering and finally I think of how I want to show up that day, sometimes it is joyful or at least not cranky! Or calm, patient whatever comes to me.

Mindfulness For Your Speech Students

In speech I don’t ask my kids to sit still with their eyes closed, this would not really work for my wiggly kids. We use 4 movements, simple they can do them sitting down or standing. I do it with them and use the minute to remember what my intention is for the session.

The students and I stand and put our hands together in front of our hearts and I tell them “it is great to see you”.

Sweep hands up and put hands together over our heads.

Lean forward with a flat back.

Finally stand in “mountain pose” which I call super hero pose. My students can get quite creative with the super hero pose. This is just standing with your arms down and slightly out with your chest up.

This unites us and lightens the mood, and prepares us to settle into speech. It is predictable and even my upper elementary students though they will at times roll their eyes they also seem to enjoy the routine. The whole thing takes less than a minute to do.

Hopefully this doesn’t seem super complicated, because once you start with this routine it becomes second nature and needs no thought at all.

If you’d like visuals to accompany the process you can find them here.

Is it possible to step out of the chaos of the new school year and practice mindfulness?
